Faves: Salt & Straw

Stopped by an old favorite, Salt & Straw, to check out their new Upcycled Food Series. A fresh twist that shows they’re still finding ways to surprise.

We were first introduced to Salt & Straw when it was a Portland exclusive—back when grabbing a scoop meant waiting in line on Alberta Street in what I think was their first brick-and-mortar shop (we missed their original cart days). The creativity and care behind every flavor were evident from the start. Since then, they’ve expanded; now we can find them in both Portland and Los Angeles, the two places we call home.

We wanted to support their upcycling efforts, so we stopped by to check out their Upcycled Food Series. Working with organizations like Urban Gleaners and Renewal Mill, they turned 8,000 pounds of ingredients that might have otherwise gone to waste into some delicious ice cream. It’s a reminder that great food can come from unexpected places if you’re willing to get creative.

The Chocolate Malted Potato Chip Cupcake was our first choice. It hits you with a malty, almost old-school milkshake flavor, then the saltiness from the potato chips sneaks in and keeps it from feeling too sweet. The potato chips add a little crunch that makes each bite interesting. We’re fans of olive oil in dessert, so we decided to give the Sourdough & Olive Oil Chocolate flavor a try. This vegan option tastes of malty, dark chocolate, with a subtle grassy, almost savory edge from the olive oil.

It’s been fun watching Salt & Straw grow while staying creative with their flavors. Even after all these years, they’re still making ice cream that makes you think a little—and then makes you want another scoop. And somehow, after all this time, there’s still always a line no matter when we go.
